We took an early small-group boat from Sorrento and reached the grotto before the worst of the crowds. The blue really is startling in person, and the island cruise afterwards with a swim stop made the whole day.

The rowboat queue was long in August and the time inside is genuinely just a few minutes, so go in knowing that. The light itself was worth the wait, and the boatman singing in the cave was a nice touch.

Great crew who kept our kids entertained on the cruise and timed the grotto so we skipped the longest line. Bring cash for the entry, as they told us up front it is paid separately on the day.

I did a semi-private trip with lunch and it felt relaxed rather than rushed. The Caprese lunch was simple but good, and having a smaller group meant we were not shoulder to shoulder at the cave.

The ferry-and-minibus day trip from Naples took the stress out of logistics. The guide handled the tickets and timing, though the grotto visit is short and the ferry back was crowded.

Private gozzo around the island was the highlight of our trip. We anchored for a swim, saw the Faraglioni up close, and only had a short wait to enter the cave because we timed it late morning.

Honest note: the grotto entry was an added fee on top of the tour and the sea was choppy, so we waited a while at the mouth. It opened in the end and the colour inside made up for the delay.

Beautiful cruise and a friendly captain, but manage expectations on the cave itself: it is a brief visit through a very low entrance. Loved the rest of the coastline and the hidden coves we stopped at.

The transfer into the little rowboat is a bit of a scramble and you do lie flat to get in, which surprised me. Once inside it was calm and glowing blue, and the skipper explained how the light works.

We combined the grotto with Anacapri and Monte Solaro in one day. It was a lot of moving around, but the boat portion to the cave was smooth and the blue water is exactly as vivid as the photos suggest.
